The lesson is going to focus on how we can conserve our water. |

This lesson is developed for third grade and it will incorporate Science, Math, Social Studies, and Language Arts. |

HELP! The water supply in Northlake, Franklin Park, and
Melrose Park is drastically decreasing! If the residents of these communities
do not change their water use practices, they will run out of water! You
have been chosen to be a water use detective. If you find any wasteful
water practices, you will need to convince your families to change their
ways and keep our community on the map!
What changes could you make in your household to conserve water?
Task
Your task is to find out how often you use water in one week at
your home. Decide whether you want to observe using the shower, toilet,
or faucet. You will keep a daily record of how often you use water
in one week by recording time spent in the shower, running water from the
faucet, or flushing a toilett
Process
1. First you'll be assigned a partner.
2. Each student will find water usage facts using the resources.
3. You will access the on line resources to help
you learn how and why conserving water is so important, and ways people
can conserve water.
4. Meet with your team to talk about ways to help save and conserve water. Make a list of water saving strategies.
5. Week #2 implement water saving strategies and chart your water usage for another week.
6. Put your data into a bar graph. Compare and contrast your
findings from week 1 and week 2. Compare your results with your group
members.
7. Choose between a poster or letter to your family explaining how you conserved water for a week

The bar graph per group done on the computer. With a partner write
a persuasive paragraph on the most beneficial water saving technique for your
households. That will be presented to the class and there will be a
vote on which water saving technique that would be best for our community.
Congratulations! You have saved our communtiy from running out of water
and being eliminated from the map. I hope you will practice wise
water use in your home town or city, and always remember to educate others
about being water savers, not water wasters!
