Bringing the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence to Our School Community
On Thursday, September 18, 2025, Education Week hosted a live online discussion, "The Power of Emotion Regulation to Drive K-12 Academic Performance and Well-Being." This free event brought together leading experts to discuss the crucial role of emotional regulation in improving both academic outcomes and overall well-being for students and educators alike.
The discussion featured a panel of distinguished speakers, including:
Marc Brackett, Ph.D., Founding Director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence.
Dr. Dawn Brooks DeCosta, Deputy Superintendent of Harlem Community School District 5.
Dr. Piedad Kaye, Director of Bilingual/ELL/Foreign Language Education for Mannheim School District 83.
Moderated by Education Week's own Peter DeWitt, the conversation explored research-based strategies to help students and teachers effectively manage emotions. The panelists shared valuable insights on how these skills can reduce stress, improve relationships, and create a more supportive and productive learning environment. The key takeaway was that by integrating emotion regulation into the school day, we can empower our entire community to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
This event highlighted the growing recognition of growth and wellbeing as a core component of a well-rounded education. We are committed to fostering a school culture that prioritizes the emotional health of our students and staff, and we will continue to seek out and share resources like this one to support our community.
