As summer break approaches, families in the community have a suite of new resources to ensure children remain healthy and well-nourished throughout the season. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has officially launched its "SUN Programs," a comprehensive suite of summer nutrition initiatives designed to provide meals and grocery benefits to children 18 and under.
The SUN Program Trio
SUN Meals: Free meals served at eligible sites for children to enjoy together.
SUN Meals To-Go: Pickup or delivery options available in specific rural areas.
SUN Bucks: A grocery benefit providing $120 per eligible school-aged child to purchase healthy food at home.
Locally, Mannheim School District 83 is leading the charge by hosting the Summer Breakfast Program. Running from Tuesday, May 26th through Friday, June 5, 2026, the district will offer nutritious breakfasts at Mannheim Middle School and Roy School. While all students in the Summer Enrichment Program will receive breakfast during their 9:00 am to 12:00 pm sessions, the program is also open to the wider community.
Any child aged 18 or younger, even if not enrolled in the enrichment program, can visit the sites between 7:30 am and 8:30 am for a free meal. The program requires no application or proof of income, emphasizing accessibility for all families looking to stretch their food budgets during the break.
